What is CliftonStrengths and why it's not another personality test

CliftonStrengths is Gallup's talent assessment. We explain how it works, what the 34 talents across four domains mean, and why it isn't a personality test.

CliftonStrengths (formerly known as StrengthsFinder) is an online talent assessment from Gallup, the American analytics company. It doesn't measure personality type. It maps 34 talents, natural patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, and ranks them from strongest to weakest. The result is a practically unique talent profile you can build on for development, leadership, and career decisions. According to Gallup, more than 30 million people have taken the assessment and over 90% of Fortune 500 companies use it.

This article is a guide for anyone hearing about the method for the first time or deciding whether to invest in it. We'll walk through how the assessment works, what exactly it measures, what the numbers say, and how to get the most out of your results.

Where CliftonStrengths comes from

Behind the method is Don Clifton, a psychologist drawn to a simple question: what happens if we stop studying what's wrong with people and start studying what's right with them? That question grew into more than 40 years of research and a tool Gallup now runs under the name CliftonStrengths.

The core idea is simple: the biggest room for growth isn't in your weaknesses, it's in your talents. Fixing weaknesses means grinding your way to average. Developing talents means building on something that already works.

How the assessment works

You complete the assessment online. You're shown pairs of statements and, under time pressure, pick the one that describes you better. The time limit is intentional: it forces instinctive answers instead of the version of yourself you'd like to project. Your results are available right after you finish.

The output is a report ranking your talents. There are two versions: Top 5 shows your five strongest talents, while CliftonStrengths 34 reveals the complete ranking of all 34 talents, including the bottom of the list.

34 talents across four domains

According to Gallup, a talent is a recurring pattern of thinking, feeling, or behaving that can be put to productive use. What that means in practice and how to spot your own talents, we've covered in the article what talents are and how to find yours.

All 34 talents fall into four domains:

You'll find all four domains and the full list of talents on the talent domains page.

Why it isn't a personality test

Personality tests, typically MBTI or DISC, sort you into a type. CliftonStrengths has no types. It ranks talents by strength, so two people almost never end up with the same profile.

The deeper difference, though, is the question the tool answers. Typologies answer "what are you like." CliftonStrengths answers "where do you perform and how do you use it." The first answer you read once and put away. The second you can actually work with: when assigning tasks, building a team, developing people, and hiring. For a detailed comparison, see the article CliftonStrengths vs. MBTI.

What the numbers say

According to Gallup, people who use their strengths every day:

  • are 6× more likely to be engaged at work,
  • are 3× more likely to rate their quality of life as excellent,
  • and are 15% less likely to quit.

On the performance side, Gallup reports 8% higher productivity for individuals and 12.5% higher productivity for teams that build on strengths every day. And an interesting detail: according to Gallup, simply knowing your own strengths raises productivity by 7.8%.

Companies that have systematically brought strengths into development show, per Gallup's global meta-analysis, 10 to 19% higher sales and 14 to 29% higher profit. These aren't motivational quotes. They're the reasons the method is used by companies that measure results.

Top 5, or the full 34?

For a first introduction, Top 5 is enough. For serious work with talents, we recommend the complete CliftonStrengths 34: only the full ranking shows where your blind spots are and what to consciously compensate for. For teams the complete profile is practically a must, because a team map is built from full profiles, not from five top talents.

The report is the beginning, not the result

The report itself is a list. The value comes from interpretation: when a certified coach connects your talent ranking to your specific role, situation, and goals. That's exactly how we work with the method. Interpretation here is done exclusively by certified Gallup coaches, with more than 800 team and individual mentoring sessions behind us, in Czech and with Czech business context. To see what the starter package with the test and interpretation looks like, visit the CliftonStrengths coaching page.

Frequently asked questions

What is CliftonStrengths in one sentence? An online assessment from Gallup that measures your 34 talents, ranks them by strength, and gives you a concrete map of where you perform.

Is CliftonStrengths available in Czech? You complete the questionnaire in Czech. You can also download the report from Gallup in Czech, but it's a machine translation that's practically unreadable. That's why we offer the Czech report: a translation of your report into readable Czech you can actually do something with.

What's the difference between a talent and a strength? A talent is a natural pattern of thinking, feeling, or behaving. A strength emerges when you invest knowledge, skills, and practice into a talent. The test measures talents. Strengths are what you build from them.

How much does CliftonStrengths cost? The questionnaire with a report is available from us for CZK 2,100. The starter package (questionnaire, report, and a one-hour interpretation session with a certified coach) costs CZK 4,500 per person. We're not VAT payers, so the prices are final. You'll find the details on the CliftonStrengths coaching page.

Do I need a coach for the results? You can read the report on your own. In our experience, though, without interpretation most of the value stays on the table. A coach connects your talents to your specific situation and helps you turn the ranking into a plan.
